☄ OOC

♚BACKTAGGING: I'll backtag forever! Just please let me know if I happen to miss you.
♚THREADHOPPING: Go ahead!
♚FOURTHWALLING: I wouldn't mind if your character recognizes her, but if they start saying some detailed stuff giving me a heads up would be nice. o/
♚OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS: Uhhh nothing I can really think of at the moment. I'll update if one comes up.

☄ IC

♚HUGGING: Go ahead! She's a pretty friendly person so it's likely she'd reciprocate the hug.
♚KISSING: Can try, but she'd probably just back away if she's uncomfortable.
♚FLIRTING: She's pretty dense and probably wouldn't notice until someone outright tells her. Even then, she'd probably deny it. So yeah, GOOD LUCK.
♚FIGHTING: Go for it! While she does have some offensive spells in her arsenal, they're primarily used for distractions/crowd control (aka they won't inflict any major damage) so she wouldn't be much of a threat. However, she is adept at unarmed combat and--for the most part--can defend herself long enough for aid to arrive.
♚INJURING: Minor injuries and such are a-okay since she can heal them quickly without much effort. But, if the injuries cross the territory of being fatal/complications please send me a message and we can plot!
♚KILLING: I'm alright with this as long as we plot.
♚TELEPATHY/MIND-READING: Go ahead! She would be pretty amazed considering no one can do that in her universe.

IN CHARACTER
Name: Rena Lanford
Canon: Star Ocean (The Second Story/Evolution)
Canon Point: Pre-Blue Sphere
Age: 19

History:

Personality:

Rena is a polite, friendly girl who can be somewhat imaginative at times. During first meeting, she would address an individual with mister/miss along with their last name until the person in question either: a) tells her not to or b) she feels like they’re close enough. This only applies to people she recognizes as older however. If they don't provide their last name though, she'll just call them by that. In the case for children, she would act friendlier in order to not make them uncomfortable. It’s easy enough to tell when she’s comfortable with a person though; she would tease them every now and then. She doesn’t take very kindly to being on the other end of that however and gets mad.

She’s a strong believer of fairy tales and other legends that seem to be only tales given the fact that there wasn't much to entertain herself with in a small village like hers. In the real world, she’s the type of person that would probably believe in Santa Claus until high school. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing though. If she hadn’t believed in the Hero of Light in the first place, she wouldn’t have thought much about Claude’s appearance and wouldn’t have gone on her adventure. Not only that, it also makes her somewhat of a romantic with her having certain perceptions of how marriage and everything should be. Like when she tells Bowman that he shouldn't leave his wife behind while he goes off adventuring; they should be spending time with each other instead.

While she’s able to see relations between other people, she doesn’t necessarily see the ones related to herself. She can be quite dense at times. She couldn’t understand why Claude was mad about her attempting to find Dias and wanting to go with him to find the children instead of with Claude. Also, when Celine was asking about whether there was more going on with Dias she wasn’t sure what she was implying, but stated that they were childhood friends.

At any rate, going back to her noticing other people’s feelings, she would be the friend that would butt in and push them towards whatever they’re hesitating about. If she knows that the person in question is going to regret something, she would be that extra voice that would (literally) tug them along. Not only that, she can sense when there is a negative atmosphere/argument around and treads lightly while trying to solve whatever disagreement had occurred. Most of the time she does this through talking to both of them and finding something in common. Surprisingly, it has worked for her in solving arguments.

Despite the fact she knows when to hold her tongue, there are times where she just speaks her mind—even to complete strangers. If she happens to heal or help someone and they don’t show gratitude or, are just being overall rude, she would get annoyed and perhaps lecture them on manners. If her friends happen to do this, they surely will get an earful from her. There is no filter when it comes to lecturing friends. After all, her friends and family are her motivation to get things done.

When she first started with her adventure, all she wanted to do was find what happened to her real mother and was quite stubborn about doing it. It wasn't because she didn't think of Westa as her mother, it was just her curiosity getting the better of her after learning of that fact as a child. When the opportunity arose, she tried her best to persuade her foster Mom to allow her to go on the journey with Claude and succeeded. Once she sets her mind to something—there isn’t much a person can do about it other than to accept it; albeit reluctantly.

In addition to this, she would also go to any lengths for her friends and family. This is evident through the latter half of the story when they had to muster enough strength to beat the Ten Wise Man in order to bring back their planet. She usually dislikes solving matters through violence and would rather attempt to persuade them, but she accepts that sometimes there is no other way to get the point across.

Anyway, even though her friends would go to the same lengths as her in terms of rescuing, Rena isn’t a damsel-in-distress. She wouldn’t wait for someone to come rescue her; she would try and find a way out on her own, if possible. When she was taken by a possessed Allen, she didn’t remain in the house for long. She attempted to escape through an underground passage despite the consequences.

She doesn't want to burden her friends with any unnecessary worries as much as she can. If she can get through it by herself, she would attempt to. She realizes that other people have worries and while she concerns herself with her friend's worries she typically keeps hers in. Though, her facial expressions tend to give her away more often than not. Which she denies when questioned.

Other than that, she’s quite logical and studious. She correctly analyzed that the points of light in the sky could hold other civilizations with an analogy that across the ocean there are other civilizations. Not only that, she managed to complete a four-year course in medicine within two years despite not being enrolled into a proper school beforehand.

Overall, Rena is a polite and friendly person, but once she’s comfortable enough with people she can be somewhat of an earful and nosey. Though, never in a way that would negatively impact her friends.

Contracts:

She wouldn't mind signing the contract considering she spent the last two years studying medicine on Earth and was about to embark on her first space mission with one of her friends anyway. While this assists the captains on their voyage back to their home, this also gives her an opportunity to gain experience since she aspires to be an army doctor in the Pangalactic Federation back home. So it’s a win-win situation for everyone!

Abilities/Skills:

Symbology

Using a particular set of symbols tattooed on the skin along with an incantation, people are able to channel their surroundings to perform paranormal abilities (aka magic). While Rena doesn’t have visible tattooed symbols to perform her symbology, the symbols are inscribed in her DNA which allow her to perform offensive, support, and healing symbology. The former two can be broken down further into the elements light and dark.

Healing

While her healing symbology is overpowered in nature, it’s more focused on instantaneous healing rather than ailments that are in the cellular scale. It can also be used to relieve pain. For example, let’s say someone gets shot. She isn’t able to use her magic to remove the bullet itself, but with her medical training that she received back on Earth she would be able to surgically remove it and use her symbology for the rest. Basically, she creates a thin membrane of symbological force on top to close the wound and stimulates the body to heal itself naturally. Depending on how long she uses the magic for, it correlates to how effective the wound healing is. Not only that, it can cure the fatigue of an individual; allowing them to get back to whatever activity sooner.

In addition to this, she is able to heal ailments such as poison. This is done through stabilizing and modifying the ailment so it won’t affect the body negatively. Although, to cure poison, she would have to know certain specifics such as if the poison is from a living organism, metals, gaseous, etc. since she needs to configure the symbology she uses.

Her healing, however, cannot reverse aging effects and can be exhausting for her so she isn’t able to heal for long periods of time.

Light

As for light symbology—the spells she possesses in this element focus on offensive and support. While light symbology naturally has a strong effect, it takes a bit less energy than healing to invoke which is still a considerable amount. Let’s take the spell Guard as an example. Basically she channels the light around her and converts it to symbological force. This symbological force can then be used to produce a transparent shield of sorts that can defend against a fireball from a dragon as an example.

Offensive: Fix Cloud, Laser Beams, Light Cross, Tractor Beam, Star Flare
Buffs: Haste, Power Up, Guard, Reflection, Angel Feather
Debuffs: Silence

Darkness

On the other hand, darkness symbology focuses on debuffs with a few offensive spells. Considering that dark symbology is naturally unstable but ubiquitous, she would have to place more concentration on spells if she wants it to surround a certain area. For example, a spell such as Deep Mist that conjures a cloud to obscure the view of anyone who is in it and can cover an entire field. But, if she wants it to only focus on a certain area, she would have to spend a lot more time during the incantation to perform that feat.

Offensive: Crush and Gravity Crush
Debuffs: Deep Mist and Delay

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths:

+ Healing. Being the only healer for most of the game she excels at healing wounds and ailments.
+ Unarmed Combat. In case people interrupt her casting/get close enough, she’s able to fend them off long enough to at least attempt to get away.
+ Determined. If she sees someone injured she'll do everything in her power to try and assist them. If her healing powers don't cure it--she would attempt to find an alternate solution to cure them.
+ Studious. She loves studying. Despite not going to school since her village didn’t have one, when she went back to Earth to study medicine she was able to complete a four year course within a span of two years.
+ Cooking. She can be considered a natural housewife. When she went to Earth with Claude, Leon, and Precis she was in charge of most of the household chores.

Weaknesses:

- Spell Casting. If someone hits or distracts her while she’s focusing her energy to cast a spell, she would have to start over.
- No Consecutive Spells. After she casts a spell, there is a bit of a delay before she can cast another. While she’s not a sitting duck due to her adeptness at unarmed combat, it’s still an annoyance since she might need to heal someone else.
- Durability. While she is an adept an unarmed combat, a few strong punches can make her winded. She still has the physique of a 20-year old with no training, after all.
- Stubborn. Once she gets to know someone, she’ll be unbelievably stubborn when it comes to them. If she doesn’t get her way and she’s aware it would undermine them, she would follow them around until they accept.
- Nosey. If she’s aware that someone may regret something (even when she’s eavesdropping) she would push them towards whatever they’re hesitating about.

Items:

Crescent-Shaped Hairpin: Nothing really special about it other than the fact she wears it all the time.
Pendant: The Quadratic key--it's a crystallized Symbological stone that reacts with other energy stones.
Knuckles of Hope: It's imbued with Symbology that allows her to cast a spell with only half the energy needed. Its effects are only available during battle.
Emerald Ring: It's imbued with Symbology that allows her to cast her magic at two-thirds the energy needed. Its effects are available at any time as long as it's worn.
A Book on Nedian History: A work-in-progress written by Chisato and Rena detailing the fate of Nede/Energy Nede.
Leather Journal: A small journal that consists of recipes and hand-drawn pictures to accompany them.

SAMPLES
Network Sample:

[Initially the sound of footsteps is the only thing that can be heard on the black screen. In a few short moments, the screen reveals a blue-haired girl with pointed ears glancing curiously at the MID. Is it on? Well, she hopes so she doesn’t want to look stupid talking to herself--]

Hello everyone! My name is Rena Lanford and I have to admit this is my first time on an actual ship since I left Arlia so I’m sorry if I may be nervous at first.

[She takes in a quick, deep breathe to calm herself before continuing.]

I don’t believe I recognize anyone from the Pangalactic Federation from the directory so for those who aren’t aware I can cast something called Symbology. I can explain more in detail if you want, but for time’s sake I’ll just say that I can perform healing, support, and offensive symbology.

[She pauses, looking away from the MID towards the floor with a downcast expression.]

Unfortunately I still don’t have much experience in the scientific portion of medicine so I’m not too sure of how I can help in that regard, but if there are any experienced doctors on board would it be alright if I can be under your tutelage? I know it’s a lot to ask, but hopefully I can help with something.

[She looks back at the MID with a light-hearted smile.]

Anyway, with that over with… Would anyone be kind enough to direct me to the kitchen? I just want to take a quick peek at it. And, hopefully if I’m allowed, I’ll try making something as a thanks.

blah blah history ☾ marze village onward

--I just realized the history section of hers is incomplete so I’ll continue from Marze Village.

On the behest of Egras, the group head to the continent of Laceur to gain more information on the Sorcery Globe. Their first order of business would be to visit the King in the capital. However, due to the preparations of the Armory Contest, the King is too busy to attend to guests and the receptionist advises them to win the tournament to have an audience.

They don’t attend at first and detour to the town of Linga to get the book from Krosse Cave translated. The linguist refuses to see them and they ask one of his close friends, Bowman, for his aid. His help doesn’t come free though; they have to search for a rare herb in the Sanctuary of Linga. Once the herb was retrieved, the linguist agrees to meet with them and tells them it will take some time to translate the book, but it will be done. She ends up recruiting Bowman at his insistence and they head back to Laceur to join the tournament.

Rena herself doesn’t join, but Claude enters instead to face off against Dias. During the night, Rena decides to get some fresh air and meets up with Dias who still hasn’t found a weapon sponsor. She recommends someone named Gamgee since she was searching with his granddaughter, Sufia, for a candidate. Nothing else really happens in the tournament except that Claude loses, but they still are able to have an audience with the king. Opera joins sometime in order to find her companion, Ernest.

When they finally meet with the King, the King reveals that they are developing a weapon called the Laceur Hope to fend off the demons. This is where a child genius named Leon is introduced and the group helps him complete the weapon by accompanying him to the Hoffman Ruins to retrieve energy stones. However, when they’re outside the ruins, Ernest appears, but possessed by a ghost. They defeat the spirit, freeing him from its grasp, but with Opera and Ernest reunited they decide to leave. Rena offers for them to join for a while though and they accept.

Anyway, they venture inside the ruins to retrieve the energy stones and they complete the Laceur Hope. It is then transferred to the front lines where it decimates a wave of demons. During this front line battle, Dias joins the party after much persuasion from Rena.

With the Laceur Hope complete and demonstration of its power, they load it onto a ship bound for the continent of Ell. However, on that ship, they were attacked by a strong demon named Cynne who deflected a shot from the weapon and destroyed it. Everyone on board ends up jumping off the ship and they awaken on the shores of the Ell continent.

The group reunites in a small village before they head towards the town of Eluria which is the base of the demons. Within that town there is a tower which holds the Sorcery Globe. As the party was half-way through the tower, Claude is beamed somewhere (back to the Calnus) by his transmitter, much to the disbelief of everyone present. After two hours, Claude finally comes back and was berated by Rena for leaving so suddenly. He apologized and comforted her before leaving behind his transmitter.

Once they reach the top, they meet the Ten Wise Men who reveal that the Sorcery Globe was sent by them to alter the planet, Expel’s, orbit. This alteration would be used to crash into Energy Nede (which is protected by an advanced energy shield) and allow them entry to the isolated planet. From this encounter, they also reveal that Rena is a Nedian, Opera/Ernest are Tetregeniot (if recruited), and Claude is an Earthling which surprised and confused everyone present. Before the impact of Expel, a member of the Ten Wise Men attacks the group and effortlessly defeated them.

They awaken inside Energy Nede in an area, known to Rena, as the Outer Wall Paradise. Almost everyone, other than Claude, Opera, and Ernest, are clueless to the fact that Expel ceases to exist, but they keep that detail to themselves in the meantime. Anyway, they are beckoned to a transporter by a person named Nall and they are transported to Central City.

Turns out Nall is the mayor of Central City and asks for their aid in defeating the Ten Wise Men. He reveals that the Nedians power has decreased in their billion years of isolation and that the group is their only hope in beating them. He also explains the history of the Ten Wise Men and informs them they have taken over a city called Phynal.

However, to have efficient travel within this continent, Nall informs them that they should head to North City to get a Synard. At North City there are artificial Synards and, as they were inputting their data, it goes berserk as a non-Nedian data was entered. This leads them to head to the Cave of Crimson Crystals to obtain the lone wild Synard. This is where they meet Noel, who aids them in this endeavor.

After learning of their accomplishment, Nall orders them to conquer the Fields of Power, Love, Intelligence, and Courage. By completing these areas, they are able to merge their powers with the ones of Nede. Sometime during this journey they recruit Chisato after finding her business card lying around.

With the powers of Nede, they begin their journey to Phynal. However, there happens to be some sort of shield surrounding the city so they head for L’Aqua to ride a beast known as a Herush to bypass the shield underwater. The Ten Wise Men anticipated this though and demonstrated their new antimatter cannon that ripped through the Calnus who was still searching for Claude nearby. Claude flew into a rage at that and, again, was easily defeated by the Ten Wise Men.

As they retreat, Nall revealed that the destructive power was caused by the Symbol of Annihilation which is basically creating a giant black hole that makes the universe collapse on itself. He also unveils that Expel is gone, but that there is a chance to bring it back if they used the power of all the cities. However, since Phynal is taken, they are unable to do it at the moment.

At any rate, even though they have the powers from the fields, Nall devised another way to beat the Ten Wise Men by giving the group improved weapons and a counter to the Symbol of Annihilation. To get the blueprints of the improved weapons, they had to visit the Symbology Weapons Laboratory. This is where Rena learns of her parent’s demise due to an accident in their experiments 700 million years ago. It wasn’t fool-proof, but Rena was placed in a small box during space-time displacement and was successfully sent into present day. Shocked by this information, Rena ran into the woods before Claude came and comforted her.

After calming down and returning to the group, Dr. Mirage begins her construction of the weapons with LEA metal. She sends the group to Fun City for a break and to practice fighting simulations against the Ten Wise Men. Once they obtain their weapons, Zaphkiel of the Ten Wise Men attacked as they’re about to being their final practice run. Once they defeat him, they exit the simulation to defeat Jophiel. Then they head to Armlock to defeat Metatron who was aiming for Dr. Mirage.

Nall learned of their victory and informs them he found a counter to the Symbol of Annihilation: the Symbol of Divinity so they head for Phynal for their final encounter against the Ten Wise Men. As they enter the tower they encounter Zadkiel, Camael, and Raphael at the entrance and defeat them. Following their demise, they confront Michael, Haniel, and Lucifer. With only one Ten Wise Men remaining, they face off against Gabriel at the top.

However, at his defeat, the Symbol of Annihilation activates which Rena promptly used the Symbol of Divinity to counter. It didn’t completely stop the Annihilation symbol though; rather, it directed all that energy to Energy Nede instead of the entire universe. Before the Symbol completely activates, Nall uses the power of the cities to bring back Expel and send the group back to their planet.

Annnnd that’s the end of the game. But, since she’s from pre-Blue Sphere here is some additional information about what happens afterward.

Basically, Claude invites her, Precis, and Leon to Earth with him. While she was reluctant to go, she relented and went on the insistence of Westa. On Earth, she studied the science of medicine and completed the four-year course in the span of two years. During this time she would also remain in contact with Chisato who is assisting her in detailing the history of Nede/Energy Nede. Based on her canon point, she’s about to embark on her first Federation mission with Claude, but she gets sent to the Ingres instead, yay.
